PAC-Teaching of English, launched in 2011, is coordinated by Anne Przewozny-Desriaux, Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès. The project aims at linking theoretical and methodological research interests with pedagogical commitments and didactic implementations in the field of spoken English Teaching & Learning (English for General and Specific Purposes, BA and Master levels; Primary and secondary sectors of education; secondary education competitive examination training).

PICL!

Among the PAC-ToE research projects is the Phonologie Incarnée de l'anglais au Collège Labitrie (PICL!). The PICL! Project was triggered by a twofold line of thought: it falls within the scope of applied and situated research for both teachers and learners. It also stems from cognitive (embodied) theoretical traditions in linguistics and psychology. PICL! is a longitudinal investigation in a French secondary school (2019-2023). On the basis of a 120-pupil spoken corpus, we explore the measurement of French non-native learners' production and perception in spoken English (interphonological scale), the assessment of self-efficacy, motivation in phonetic performance, as well as the conception of educational modules.

PAC-Prosody

PAC-Prosody (Aix-Marseille Université) is coordinated by Sophie Herment, Aix-Marseille Université. The project, launched in 2013, is dedicated to the study of the rhythm and intonation of the varieties of English, at the interface with acoustics and syntax, and is designing tools for the semi-automatic annotation of prosody.

Methodology
The core protocol for the PAC-Prosody surveys is the PAC-LVTI one.
Additional tasks for the study of prosody have been conceived and constitute the PAC Prosody extension (which comes in addition to the original protocol):
– a list of sentences to be read (declaratives, questions, emphasis and enumerations)
– a map-task (specifically created for each survey location)
– an image described by the speaker

IPCE-IPAC

IPCE-IPAC (InterPhonology of Contemporary English) is devoted to the study of variation on the basis of learner corpora of English, and consequently concerned with the acquisition and teaching of English as a foreign language. It is coordinated by Paolo Mairano, Université de Lille, and Caroline Bouzon, Université de Lille.

Goals
– to provide an international database of L2 English interphonology comprising learners with different L1 varieties as well as different L2 varieties as their targets/models (and not simply General British or General American);
– to provide data and analyses for phonologists, psycholinguists, education science specialists and trainers interested in the teaching/learning of English as a foreign/second language (PAC-ToE);
– to give a better picture of English spoken by non-natives in its unity and (geographical, social, educational and stylistic) diversity;
– to develop multi-level analyses of spoken non-native English: phonology, vocabulary, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, etc.

Originality
There are many learner corpora of English, but they typically focus on grammar, vocabulary and, more generally, written forms rather than explicitly/exclusively on phonology, they do not necessarily share a common protocol which allows the comparison of results and the cross-linguistic study of selected difficulties.
IPCE-IPAC's originality notably relies on building comparable data, including with the PAC native speaker corpora.

Methodology
It is inspired by both the PAC and the IPFC (Interphonologie du Français Contemporain) protocols and is built with a modular structure. The core of the protocol revolves around:
– 2 wordlists (used for a repetition task and for a read-aloud task);
– a read-aloud task of the PAC text, as well as its version in the L1 (providing a baseline against which we compare the acquisition of L2 phonology);
– a read-aloud task of some sentences explicitly targeted towards eliciting different intonation patterns;
– a formal conversation with a teacher.

Other supplementary modules include:
– a L1-specific wordlist used to test specific difficulties observed for a given L1;
– a map-task and an informal conversation (in pairs with another learner);
– a picture description task.

The general proficiency level of learners who are invited to participate in the study ranges from A2 to C2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, 2001).

To date, four L1s are represented in the project:
– French (Paris, Lyon, Lille): 25 speakers
– Italian (Torino): 12 speakers
– Chinese (Xi'an): 12 speakers
– Spanish (Chile & Colombia): 10 speakers

PAC-LVTI

PAC-LVTI (Langue, Ville, Travail, Identité / Language, City, Work, Identity) is coordinated by Anne Przewozny-Desriaux, Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès. The project, launched in 2011, aims at the sociolinguistic description of language in urban and post-urban contexts, notably in Toulouse (FR), Marseille (FR), and Manchester (GB), three urban centers that have a similar aura/influence in France and England respectively. Sydney (Aus), Brisbane (Aus), Ipswich (Aus), Caloundra (Aus), Montreal (Can), Ontario (Can), Trenton (NJ, USA), Ithaca (NY, USA), Murfreesboro (TN, USA), Dublin (Irl), and County Galway (Irl) are currently under study.

Methodology
The PAC-LVTI protocol is now the common protocol for all the PAC surveys as it notably includes a questionnaire about language, city, work and identity which can be used as a basis for the formal/semi-guided interview.
